With greater flexibility, however, comes greater responsibility. Working in the gig-economy means no paid sick days and other comfy corporate perks. It also means you don’t have an HR team to lean on for more traditional requests like income and employment verifications.

This flexible approach to employment creates friction with traditional industries like banking. How can a financial institution verify the income of an applicant who’s worked 4 different jobs in just one week?

For Lyft Drivers

If you are a driver for Lyft, you are not legally considered an employee of the company. Instead, you are technically a contractor. From dog-walkers to blog writers, the gig-demand economy is made up of all kinds of different contractors.

Nevertheless, it is possible to verify your employment as a Lyft driver. Upon request (and just before tax season), Lyft provides their drivers with a 1099-K form. This form includes “the gross amount of all reportable payment transactions”. In other words, the 1099-K lists all the money you’ve earned as a driver over the past year. Many other companies who empower the sharing economy also offer 1099-K forms to their contractors.

For Employees

If you are an employee at Lyft (i.e. you’ve signed an employment agreement before beginning work), there are a couple of different ways you can pursue a verification, depending on the type of request.

Soft Requests:

The type of employment verification is often determined by the status of the requester. A “soft” verification occurs when someone, like a landlord or real estate company, requires verification of employment before issuing a lease to a prospective renter. It is considered “soft” because there are fewer regulations surrounding this type of verification. Instead, it serves as an additional data point for a landlord to use in making a decision.

In the instance of a “soft” verification request, you can ask the Lyft HR team for an employment letter. Alternatively, depending on the requester, a pay stub may provide enough information to confirm you are a Lyft employee.

Hard Requests:

More formal, or “hard”, employment verifications are generally carried out by lenders as a part of a loan application process. Since the lending industry is heavily regulated, these requests require more thorough verifications. The good news for employees, however, is that a formal request for employment verification is conducted directly through Lyft’s HR department, meaning the company, not the employee, is responsible for providing the necessary documentation.
