About Andreessen Horowitz
Andreessen Horowitz is a venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, California. The company was founded by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz in 2009. As of 2018, the company employed over 200 individuals. Both founders achieved success investing in seed funding rounds of early technology companies before starting the firm, earning them the title of “super angel investors”.
Andreessen Horowitz’s first venture fund was capitalized with $300 million USD in investments from private investors. A year later they raised another $650 million USD fund and by 2011 they already had $1.2 billion USD in assets under management. One of their first investments was in the telecommunications company, Skype. Although the investment was initially criticized by financial experts, the decision paid off when Skype was acquired by Microsoft for $8.5 billion USD.
AS of 2018, Andreessen Horowitz has raised over $7 billion USD across seven different funds. The company considers themselves “stage agnostic” investing in seed as well as late-stage rounds. Unlike other venture capital firms, each partner works of all the firm’s portfolio companies. The firm also invests heavily in recruiting for its portfolio companies. In June 2011, former U.S. Treasury Secretary and Harvard professor Larry Summers joined Andreessen Horowitz as a special advisor.
