Ciena is an American company that supplies telecommunications networking equipment and software all over the world. The company has been around since the 1990s and the headquarters are in Hannover, Maryland they are a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange and their main products are networking systems and products to go along with those systems. The company was founded in 1992 by David Huber and Kevin Kimberlin. One of the things that they are most well-known for was the largest IPO of a startup company ever with a valuation of $3.4 billion after the first day. They had the largest market capitalization of any new IPO and they were the most profitable company ever in the first year of business. The company survive through the telecommunications downturn of the 2000, but their revenues had been cut by approximately 80 percent. With diversification, the company was able to grow and expand their product portfolio. Some of the acquisitions that they made between 1997 and 2018 include packet design, cyan, Akara, Omnia Communications, Terabit, World Wide Packets, TeraXion and DonRiver just to name a few.

The company has a number of global offices including four in Canada; as well as offices in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Israel, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the United Kingdom. They reported $2.94 billion in revenue as of the last fiscal year with revenue per share at $20.47. They had quarterly revenue growth of 12.4 percent.
