The history of the company goes back to 1946. Six partners from another law firm called Root, Clark, Buckner and Howland decided to start their own firm. Eventually, Henry Friendly was removed after he became a judge, and the name was changed to its current form, incorporating the name of another partner Hamilton. They have been involved in some of the most notable cases of the 21st century and have had some well-known attorneys pass through the firm including Darren Walker, Robert Rubin and David Kennedy.
The company has two main offices one in New York City at One Liberty Plaza and the other on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Some other locations include Frankfurt, Beijing, Cologne, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Abu Dhabi, Milan, Brussels, Paris, Rome, London, Hong Kong, Moscow and Seoul, South Korea. They reported $1.21 billion in revenue as of the 2017 fiscal year over all of their 18 offices.
