The Cummins Engine Company started in Columbus, Indiana, in 1919 by a local mechanic named Clessie Cummins. The original focus of the company was to develop diesel engines, but despite their best efforts, it was not until 1933 when diesel engines started being used successfully. However, all the engines that the company had created were being used in railroad switchers and it made that engine the leader of road building after World War II in the United States. Cummins started an assembly plant in the sixties in Scotland, and in just a few short decades they had expanded internationally on a major scale. Products offered by Cummins include engines, power generation, Turbo technologies, filtration and more.

Cummins now sells their products and services in more than 190 countries and territories through approximately 600 distributors. Some of these distributors are independent and simply sell the parts made by Cummins, but others are owned by the company. They are a publicly traded company, and in 2017, they reported revenue of $22.46 billion with revenue per share at $136.08. They also had terrific quarterly revenue growth at 20.8 percent.
