The airline and its subsidiaries together operate more than 5,400 flights daily, serving a large domestic and international network of over 319 destinations across 54 different countries (and six different continents). It employs over 86,000 professionals that fulfill a diverse set of roles including pilots, hosts and hostesses, administrative roles, financial roles, marketing, project management, maintenance, and much more.
Delta is considered to be one of the five remaining "legacy carriers." It is also the sixth oldest airline based on its 1929 foundation date, and the oldest operating in the US. As of 2013, the company is considered the world's largest airline based on the number of scheduled passengers (120.6 million in 2013). It is the second largest in terms of revenue and capacity.
The company's origins can be traced to the Huff Daland Dusters, which was founded in 1924 in Macon Georgia as a crop dusting operation. The business then moved to Monroe, Louisiana, where it was rebranded as Delta Air Services. Other predecessors include Western Airlines and Northwest Airlines. These companies began flying as early as 1926 and 1927.
