Hy-Vee

Hy-Vee is a group of over 245 supermarkets that are located throughout the Midwestern United States. The company is completely employee-owned and has its headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. The largest Hy-Vee store opened on March 10, 2015, in Bloomington, Illinois. All of the large stores are full-service supermarkets that contain extras like floral departments, dining and carryout food service, wine and spirits, pharmacies, bakeries, health clinics, and more. Many also contain health markets, which feature natural and organic products and coffee kiosks within the store. Some stores contain fuel stations outdoors and others even have full-service restaurants and fitness centers. The number of employees in 2018 was over 85,000 and there are lots of employment opportunities at Hy-Vee. They include servers, produce clerks, assistant managers, online personal shoppers, courtesy clerks, seafood managers, meet specialists, dish room clerk, and sushi clerk just to name a few.

The company began in 1917 when David Vredenburg teamed up to form Vredenburg & Lewis, operating stores as part of the General Supply Company which was owned by the reorganized LDS church and located in Lamoni, Iowa. In 1922, the General Supply Company became incorporated, and the group went through several name changes until it settled on Hyde & Vredenburg, which eventually became Hy-Vee.

This group has more than 245 locations in the Midwestern United States including Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska. The original store where this company began has now been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a private company that is owned by employees; however, there are estimates based upon past reporting that the store has revenue of $10 billion as of 2018.
