Khosla Ventures is a venture capital firm with headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The firm was founded by Vinod Khosla in 2004. The firm’s initial investment were capitalized solely by Mr. Khosla himself and were not open to institutional investors. Khosla had gained significant personal wealth prior to founding Khosla Ventures as one of the co-founders of the networking company Sun Microsystems as well as being a general partner at another venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Khosla’s first fund open to institutional investors was the Khosla III fund, which had a capitalization of $1 billion USD and was raised in 2009.
Khosla Ventures has a strong investment track record in both space and clean energy sectors. As of 2018, the firm employed 73 people in its California headquarters. At the time, the firm had 79 successful exits in the form of IPO as well as mergers or acquisitions. Besides space and clean energy, the firm also invests in additional sectors, including agriculture/food, sustainable energy, consumer, enterprise, advertising, financial services, semiconductors, education, health, big data, and robotics. Current and historic portfolio companies include Affirm, Cadre, DoorDash, Everlane, Instacart, Nutanix, Okta, Opendoor, Tile and Rubrik. As of 2018, the firm had $1.3 billion in assets under management, excluding Mr. Khosla’s personal investment funds.
