Koch industries was founded in 1940 when Fred C. Koch developed a brand-new refining process for crude oil. Although he died in 1967, his interest was split among his four sons and in 1983, the stakes were bought by Charles and David Koch from the other two sons; that made them majority shareholders of the company with each owning approximately 42 percent of both the company and the trust. The full scope of products offered by the company include chemicals, commodities, trading, asphalt, energy, fibers, minerals, finance, fertilizers, plastics, pulp, paper, petroleum and natural gas as well as some ranching interests as well.
This is a worldwide organization that employs over 120,000 people with many of them scattered around the world in more than 60 countries. About half of the business is in the United States, which is also where half of the employees are located. The company owns Georgia-Pacific Paper, Flint Hills Resources, Coke Pipeline, Coke Fertilizer, Coke Minerals, Matador Cattle Company, and Guardian Industries. They are privately held company that has vowed to never go public, but it is estimated that they made approximately $115 billion in revenue for 2017.
