Kroger is an American retailer that is based in Cincinnati, Ohio. As of 2016, it was the largest supermarket chain in the United States based on its revenue of over $115 billion. Kroger is also behind only Walmart as being the largest retailer in the United States, based on revenue. Kroger operates more than 2700 supermarkets and department stores, some of them through their subsidiaries, and as of 2017, they had over 443,000 employees. The Kroger Company started self-service shopping in the early 1900s, allowing people to select their own items from shelves and then bring them to the clerk, instead of having the clerk get the item for them. Kroger became the first grocery store chain to ensure quality of their products and test foods in the 1930s. Kroger also owns Kroger Marketplace and a variety of food and drug stores and convenience stores, among others. As a grocery store, they have a variety of frozen goods, fresh meat, eggs and other dairy products, soups, crackers, bread, and various bakery items. Many Kroger stores also have pharmacies and gas stations attached to them.
Kroger operates only in the United States, even though it is the third-largest retailer in the world. There are over 2700 supermarkets and department stores. Kroger can be found in 35 states as well as the District of Colum bia. Some of their stores are considered superstores and others are just regular grocery stores. Kroger also operates 37 processing and manufacturing facilities. Their reported revenue as of 2017 was $124.18 billion.
