The founder of Lowe's was a man named Lucius Smith Lowe, who opened the first store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, in 1921. At the time, the store was called Lowe's North Wilkesboro Hardware. When he died, his daughter inherited the business and sold the company to her brother. The company grew due to the surge of new construction that happened after the Second World War. The store sold building materials and hardware as well as a variety of other general store goods and since Jim Lowe took on a business partner that understood how the business should operate, offered expertise with the hardware and supplies that they were selling. However, the company split in 1952 with Jim Lowe taking the hardware side of the business and his partner taking everything else. Lowe's expanded through the years and became one of the most successful home improvement stores in the United States.
Lowe's has a limited presence internationally with a few stores in Canada and in Mexico. However, the majority of their retail locations are in the United States. Lowe's is a publicly traded company reported $70.51 billion in revenue for the 2017 fiscal year with revenue per share at $85.57.
