PPG Industries is an American company on the Fortune 500 list. They are one of the largest suppliers in the world of paints, coatings, and specialty materials. Their headquarters are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and they are also present in dozens of countries around the world. By revenue, they are the second largest global coatings company after AkzoNobel. As of 2015, they had over 46,000 employees. This company began in 1883 by John Baptiste Ford and John Pitcairn, Jr., at a site in Creighton, Pennsylvania which is just outside of Pittsburgh. The original name of the company was the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. They soon became the first commercially successful producer of high quality flat glass using the plating process. They also had the first plate glass plant to power furnaces with natural gas. The company expanded quickly and by 1900 there were 10 plants in a 65 percent share in the US market. Products of this company include basic and industrial chemicals, decorative paints, industrial finishing products, and coatings.
The company began expanding internationally in 2000, when PPG Industries agreed to buy Courtaulds Aerospace for approximately $500 thousand. PPG now not only manufactures sealants in California and throughout the United States, it also has 14 application support centers throughout the world with many of them in North America. However, there are also locations in Africa, Australia, and Asia. PPG reported 2017 quarterly revenue growth of 8.6 percent and a total yearly revenue of $15.37 billion. They had $61.21 revenue per share.
