Publix is an employee-owned, American chain of supermarkets with headquarters in Lakeland, Florida. Publix is a private corporation that started in 1930. Publix is found throughout the southeastern United States including South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. They are one of the largest grocery chains in the United States. As of 2018, there were over 193,000 people working for Publix. The first Publix store opened in Winter Haven, Florida, in 1940. The company was founded by George Jenkins on September 6, 1930, and not too long after, the store made $120,000 in sales (1934). That allowed Jenkins to open up a second store called the Economy Food Store, which was in the same town. Even though this was during the Great Depression, he was able to make a success from his business. Eventually, Jenkins purchase more stores and branded them all Publix supermarkets. Some of the offerings that you might find within Publix include bakery items, fresh meat, cheese, eggs and other dairy products, fresh baked bread, pharmacy outlets, household items, over-the-counter medications, seasonal items, and more.
The headquarters of Publix are in Lakeland, Florida, and they have over 1200 locations in states like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. They reported revenue of $34.56 billion in 2017, which was an increase from their $34 billion reported in 2016. Operating income was $3.02 billion.
