Although they primarily supply paint through their retail stores, they are in the category of general building materials due to their other subsidiaries. Their headquarters is located in Cleveland, Ohio. As of December 2017, Sherwin-Williams had 52,695 employees. Sherwin-Williams was founded by Henry Sherwin and Edward Williams in 1866. The company began in Cleveland, Ohio, where the headquarters are still located today. There are four distinct operations that the Sherwin-Williams company can be grouped into. They include the paint stores group, the consumer group, the Latin America coatings group, and the global finishes group. Paint stores sell the Sherwin-Williams branded architectural paints and coatings, as well as marine products and industrial offerings. The company also maintains special the contracts with equipment manufacturers for finishes and paints. In 2016, Sherwin-Williams had 4080 paint stores across the United States. Other divisions provide special automotive finishes, while spray source service centers provide equipment, parts, accessories, and maintenance to Sherwin-Williams rental programs. There are more than 100 of the service centers located in the United States and Puerto Rico.

The only other country Sherman Williams operates in is Mexico, with 109 branches of Sherwin-Williams in the country. For the 2017 fiscal year, Sherwin-Williams reported an income of $17.23 billion and revenue per share of $184.97. They also reported revenue growth for the quarter at 27.8 percent.
