The Thomson Corporation was founded by Roy Thomson in 1934 in Ontario. At the time, he was the publisher of the Timmins Daily Press. In 1953, Thomson acquired another newspaper and moved to Scotland. He consolidated the media position in Scotland in 1957 when he was awarded the franchise for Scottish television. In 2014, the company organized around several different divisions which included financial and risk, legal, pharma and life sciences, Reuters news agency, tax and accounting with the previous divisions being intellectual property and scholarly and scientific research.
Although this company began with a purchase of the British company Reuters group in 2008, they are found all around the world. In fact, they were ranked as the leading corporate brand in Canada in 2010 and they have completed over 200 acquisitions since 2008.
The company operates in more than 100 countries with approximately 45,000 employees working at those locations. It is a publicly traded company and in the 2017 fiscal year, they reported a total yearly revenue of $11.4 billion with revenue per share reported at $16.03. The quarterly revenue growth was positive with a 2.4 percent growth. However, the quarterly earnings growth was much higher at 225.5 percent.
