About UPMC
UPMC refers to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which is a $16 billion nonprofit health organization. The organization has over 600 clinical locations and 35 hospitals. They also have commercial and international ventures and even an insurance division. UPMC is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and has flagship facilities located in that city. UPMC has consistently been ranked by news magazines as having some of the best hospitals in the United States. UPMC was founded in 1893 and was originally called the Presbyterian Hospital. Today, this is still the flagship facility. Part of the hospital's roots are also in the Western Pennsylvania Medical College, which was founded in 1886. In 1892, the Medical College became affiliated with the Western University of Pennsylvania. The healthcare college and organization grew, and names were changed until it became UPMC. Right now, the organization has 35 hospitals, 8000 licensed beds, and 600 clinical locations including doctors' offices and a health insurance division that can boast a 3.4 million membership. Some of the services that UPMC offers includes aesthetic plastic surgery, aging, bariatric surgery, behavioral health services, cardiology programs, the center for integrative medicine, diabetes support, oncology, and much more.
The organization is only within the United States and does not operate internationally. However, they have hundreds of locations within the United States. Most recently, UPMC acquired Susquehanna health for $500 million on October 18 of 2016. They are a nonprofit organization, and it is estimated that they are a $10 billion company, making them one of the leading nonprofit health systems in the United States.
