About Verizon
Verizon Communications is one of the largest providers of telecommunications in the United States and part of the corporate components of the Dow Jones industrial average. The company has their headquarters in Manhattan, New York City, but actual incorporation took place in Delaware. Verizon is a combination of two words - "veritas," which is Latin for truth and the word "horizon." Verizon has over 153,000 employees without counting the salespeople who are independent contractors and are paid on commission from phone sales or who are licensed to provide Verizon services through a service center or telephone store. There are many different positions that Verizon has open, with a significant number being sales positions inside the stores. They also have customer service positions, technology positions, corporate positions, and administrative positions, among others.
Verizon began with the breakup of AT&T Corporation when the Justice Department made a ruling that the Bell System would have to be split into seven companies. Bell Atlantic started in 1984 and was made up of several companies including Bell Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone, and C&P telephone. In 2000, Bell Atlantic moved their headquarters to New York City and changed their name to Verizon. Verizon expanded their business in 2015 by acquiring America Online and then Yahoo a short time later. Verizon's products include cable television, landline, broadband, digital television, IPTV, digital media, Internet services, and telematics. However, Verizon is most famous for their mobile phone service and has a significant portion of the market share.
Verizon Wireless, one of Verizon's subsidiaries, is the largest wireless communication service provider in the United States with 147 million mobile customers. They are the only telecommunications company to be both on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. They are also the second largest telecommunications company overall after AT&T. Their reported revenue was $129.65 billion for the 2017 fiscal year.
